A Trip to Tropical Atherton Tablelands

One fine Saturday morning, we just decided to go the Tablelands on the spur of the moment. Oh how wonderful it was! ^_^

“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!..” [Psalm 34:8]

Here’s a list of places our little adventure brought us (and hopefully when you come and visit tropical North Queensland, you’ll enjoy these attractions, too!):

[1] The Humpy and Nut World (1 Kennedy Highway, Tolga QLD 4882)
The Humpy offers farm fresh fruit and veggies, nuts, a large range of gluten-free, wheat-free & organic products, locally produced jams, chutneys, sauces, teas and coffee, confectionery, gifts, Himalayan Salt lamps and more!

[3] The Golden Drop Winery (227 Bilwon Rd, Biboohra via Mareeba QLD 4880)
Locals and tourists from all over the world visit the Winery everyday for the unique experience of visiting a working mango plantation, and to sample their lovely refreshing tropical Mango Wines, together with Citrus Cellos, Mango Port, and Golden Mango liqueur style wine.

[4] The Shaylee Strawberry Farm (Gillies Hwy cnr Gillies St, Atherton QLD 4883)
Shaylee Strawberries is located on the Atherton Tablelands (700 meters above Sea level) between Atherton and the historic Township of Yungaburra. Shaylee’s rich red volcanic soil and temperate weather conditions are just right for the cultivation of large succulent strawberries. These are at their best during the tourist season, July to November.

[5] Nick’s Swiss-Italian Restaurant and the Yungaburra Pizzeria (Tolga Country Lodge, 33 Gillies Hwy, Yungaburra QLD 4884)
Nick’s serves Swiss-Italian cuisine and modern Australian dishes, from the a la carte menu. The range of eating experiences on offer at Nick’s are: morning and afternoon teas; light or full lunches; dinners; special functions and events and takeaway meals. Their drinks are served from their rustic Yodellers Bar. Just next door is the Yungaburra Pizzeria serving Aussie, Italian and Specialty pizzas, salads, desserts and beverages. On-site accommodation at Birds ‘n’ Bloom Cottages is available, so you can walk to a comfortable bed after a wonderful night out.

[6] Lake Barrine National Park and Teahouse Cafe (Lake Barrine, QLD 4884)
A mere 1 hour drive from Cairns via the scenic Gillies Highway brings you to the cool atmosphere of the Atherton Tablelands, where you will come across a beautiful, enchanting natural lake hidden in World Heritage Rainforest. Lake Barrine is something special as it is actually a water-filled crater left by a volcanic eruption approximately 10,000 years ago. Whether you’re interested in a fully guided boat tour of the lake and its creatures, a swim in the freshwater lake, a walk around the lake in the lush rainforest or a quick snack at the lakeside teahouse amongst beautiful terraced gardens, Lake Barrine offers one of the most beautiful and relaxing environments in the tropics.
[7] The Gallo Dairyland (Malanda-Atherton Rd & E Barron Rd, East Barron QLD 4883)
Well worth a drive and only an hour from Cairns on the lush tropical Atherton Tablelands, you will find a dairy farm that has opened their gates to the public. With the farming enterprise positioned half-way between Atherton and Malanda, you will be pleasantly surprised to find a fully operational dairy farm, a gourmet cheese factory, a sensational café/restaurant and last but not least, the most beautiful hand-crafted chocolate.
